New Year Fitness Goals

Tips for staying on top of your your fitness goals in the new year.

Studies show that 43% of people plan on not following through with their new year's resolutions. Here are some tips to keep you and your fitness goals on track this year.

Try A New Workout

When you do the same workout, your body gets better at it, which means it doesn’t have to work as hard. This may sound nice, but results in less calories being burned, by adjusting your workout your body will end up working harder. Additionally, by switching up your workout it gives the overused muscles a chance to rest and the underused muscles a chance to grow. Last but not least, a new workout will keep it FUN and help you achieve your fitness goals.

Stretch More

A light stretch before and workout, and a deep stretch after a workout keeps your muscles healthy and strong. Added flexibility increases range of motion and results in better form during your workout. When muscles become tight, they are not able to extend all the way. Stretching also decreases the chance of exercise injury.

Warm Up

Warming up your body activates your cardiovascular system and makes sure you are getting proper blood flow to your muscles.

Cool Down

It’s important to allow your body a gradual cool down period after exercise. A cool down after a good workout will regulate your heart rate and body temperature, reduce the amount of lactic acid build up in your muscles, and prevent exercise injuries such as muscle tears. It is also great for stress release and relaxation.

Hydrate

Make sure you are staying hydrated before, during and after exercise. When you are dehydrated, your mind and body won’t function at it’s best. Dehydration will cause you to fatigue quicker and prevent your body from regulating its temperature.

Keeping Track Of Progress

Break your fitness goals down into smaller steps, set a realistic deadline for weight loss or muscle gain. If it takes you longer than you originally planned, that’s okay, keep going! With persistence you will hit your goals. Keep a notebook for tracking your progress. Seeing improvement is a great way to motivate yourself. Your fitness goals may be closer than you think!

Taking The Stairs

When you have the option, take the stairs! Every step counts.
